Hi All,

I came across this DF with long antennae while looking for other macros..I haven't seen one like this before

I googled and from wikipedia it could be an owlfly.

Quote: Owlflies are dragonfly-like insects with large bulging eyes and long knobbed antennae. They are neuropterans in the family Ascalaphidae; they are only distantly related to the true flies, and even more distant from the dragonflies and damselflies. They are diurnal or crepuscular predators of other flying insects, and are typically 5 cm (2.0 in) long. Unquote

Yes, this is an Owlfly.

My first and only sighting was few years back at Lorong Halus.

Hi Allan,

I took this shot in HK after heavy rainfall. Friday and Saturday was raining and sunday was clear.
I went up to my favorite macro place around 08:00 and there was still muddy and raindrops on leaves. I stayed until 11:00 then started downhill until I heard loud wings clashing. It was this owlfly fighting for territory with a red DF and blue DF. 2:1 not fair :?
But the bigger owlfly won and I took a picture of it.
Thanks,

Paul

Hi Trident and peacefuldove,

I am very excitited already after reading the info from Songlim18 and Allan.
I could never have thought that I would catch one of these in HK. I hope the trail walkers would keep their bug nets at home.
Keep the ecosystem in balance. they catch anything from fish to crabs and from tadpoles to butts
Guess I'll keep this owlfly my secret next time I meet it again. :)

Thanks,

Paul
