WE'RE NOW GOING BY CARS (edited on 29 June, by Tony Png
(Durian mid-season in Tangkak)
This durian trip is organized for NPSS members and their families.
(Please note, Sunday is chosen so as not to clash with the Saturday, NPSS Nature Photography Course).
Some facts about durians:
A durian season in any locality lasts 6 weeks.
In mid-season, durians taste best and are more plentiful.
Tangkak is 50km from the renowned durian town of Segamat.
Tangkak and Segamat share the same hills, so, durian varieties are similar.
Mount Ophir (Gunung Ledang Recreation Forest) lies between the two towns.
Durian loses some flavor after being sun-scorched and wind-blown on lorries to Singapore.
We go to the plantations to savor the fresher durians.
Departure at 7:30am. from the Lavender MRT station.
After breakfast in Kulai we will proceed to Tangkak.
Upon reaching our plantation we will get to taste different types of durians:
Local durians a.k.a. “durian kampong” in Malay, and
Grafted or marcoted durians a.k.a. “durian kahwin” in Malay.
“Durian kampong” does not have specific names; they can only be found in their locality; they have unique tastes which cannot be found elsewhere. Malaysian friends advise that the cheaper “durian kampong” are just as good as the "durian kahwin".
“Durian kahwin” have names such as D24, D3, D101, XO, ang hay, kim hong, kunyit, mao sang wang. We pay more for “kahwin”.
There will also be other local fruits for us to eat at the plantation.
Do not pack fruits while others are eating. After all have eaten you should only pack the fruits that you have paid for.
Unconsumed durians and other local fruits will be sold to participants (the proceeds go into our common pool).
You are advised to bring stronger plastic bags, plastic boxes and identification markers for your purchases.
Durians and local fruits unsold will be distributed at the plantation.
Before the trip you may pre-order “durian kahwin” in lots of 5kg. per bag. (Inform me 2 weeks before departure date).
Singapore Immigration Control Authorities may require you to carry your fruits through the checkpoints, so, do not buy more than you can carry.
Do not expect others to carry your load; unless he’s your brother.
You may want to open the durians at the plantation and pack them into plastic boxes to lighten your load.
Money matters:
All participants’ money goes into a common pool to pay for the coach, guide, tips, breakfast, durians, and dinner.
Proceeds from the sale of fruits go into the common pool.
I’ll try to use all the money or I may refund some. (I will decide; thanks).

______________________________________________________________________________
We must have at least 35 participants to fill a coach.
Participant payments should be received by 19 June – then, I will book the coach and durians.
If we do not have 35 participants we will have to change plans. Drive? Change to nearer durian locality?
If there are not enough durians, the trip will be called off (at least one week before departure).
To avoid arguments, I will make all the decisions, thanks.
Cheers,
Tony
