Nikon D90 - 3rd Party lens

Postby unicorn » 31 Jul 2010, 12:42

[color=#0000BF]Hi I'm new here. 2 days ago i just bought my first DSLR Nikon D90 from Havey Norman. They are offering a Nikon Portrait len 50mm at S$119 if i want to purchase it for the next few days. Original price at S$229. I want to know what is a Portrait len does? and if there is any cheaper 3rd party lens suitable for Nikon D90.

I'm inspired by the photos posted here and I'm more keen to get a macro len. Is there any recommendation?

Thank you guys.

Hi,

Welcome to NPSS.

the 50mm I believe is 50mm f/1.8? that is one of the most value for money lens. A portrait lens means it is for ............ portrait  seriously, I think when people mentioned it is for portrait, it means it is for shooting people.

If your interest is in Macro, get a dedicated macro lens. 3rd party macro lens are very good, e.g. Tamron 90mm, Tamron 180mm, Sigma 150mm, etc.

Cheers,
SC

The AF 50mm f/1.8D at $119 is a very good buy. Get it if you have the spare cash even if you won't use the lens now. Unless you have the intention to buy the much more expensive f/1.4 version in the near future.

Like SC has said, this is the most value for money lens. This lens is cheap but it produce good quality images, and the good thing is, it is small in size, when I go birding, some time I just dropped this lens in any of the unoccupied pocket in my camera bag, it won't take up too much space but it is there when I need it. ;)

Hi Unicorn,

The 50/1.8 is a good lens BUT to be honest, I never had a use for one. I bought into the older Nikon 50/1.4s for my 5D (adapted) as I needed them for video. My normal shooting never saw me reaching for one.

A much better buy though more costly will be a 50/2.8 or 3.5 macro lens. You get a fast aperture lens that works great wide open and the macro option as well.

That said, a longer macro lens in the range of 100-200mm is always more desirable and is the choice of all the macro shooters here.

Cheers

Han

I bought the 50mm/1.8 about 2 years ago on the same advice above. But, like Han, I hardly use it as my zoom lens is able to the job and I am lazy to change lens. I didn't regret buying it though as it is really a cheap & very light lens that produces good quality images and I keep it as a backup lens
