During the nite macro, I find it very difficult to handheld a 180mm macro lens and focus manually at the same time. However, at times a tripod is very difficult to maneuver around. So i wonder is a monopod(unipod) a better choice in a nite macro photography? Pls advice, 10Q.

I shared the same experience with YiXiong, probably a monopod is a good choice to replace tripod and provide some support over handheld.
Having said that, I don’t even have a monopod .

agree a monopod will be very useful for nite macro.
I think one can use the tripod in a monopod style if all 3 legs are brought in.
Another idea during bad economy…February 16, 2009 at 3:16 pm #282456
A tripod is the best option, but when not possible, a monopod will do better than handheld.
It’s very mobile and can be moved easily, but not as stable as the tripod.
And have to shoot at a faster speed to prevent shake.February 16, 2009 at 5:47 pm #282505
thanks Allan, Darren and Richard for the advice.
Now I am contemplating to get a monopod or just go to the gym to build up my muscles

Why don’t you borrow my monopod to try out first before deciding if you want to buy one.
My monopod have been sitting around for sometime now, you can take it out for

Sure, I’ll bring it along.February 18, 2009 at 9:01 am #282608Yeo, Wee HanSpectator
I will bringing my monopod in case anyone wants to try as well. I myself have almost nil experience since I find a tripod more suitable but yup, for night macro, a monpod will be better since you will be shooting at your flash sync speed.

No prob Pegi. I will have a ballhead on top which is actually not so ideal as what you really need from a monopod is just a tilthead.
