Shot this pond heron at bidadari. Does anyone know how to tell chinese and javan pond heron apart when they are in non breeding plumage? Both my guides say "indistinguishable from other pond heron". My guess is javan pond heron.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Chuan Ming,
You are right that non-breeding heron is quite difficult to tell apart. I Think in Penang where Indian, Chinese and Javan are found, it will be even more confusing.
For this I will go with Chinese Pond Heron as it is more common in Singapore. Javan is rare, there were 2 at Lor Halus last Mar/April and attracted many birders and photographers.
